Preface
In December 2023, the Fourth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Leaders’ Meeting was held. During the meeting, the six leaders commended the steady progress and efficient execution of the LMC Bumper Harvest Projects, highlighting their positive impact on agricultural and rural development. Over the years, the six LMC countries have fostered collaboration in key areas of shared interest, including production of grains, tropical crops, fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry, aquaculture, disease prevention and control, agricultural product processing, and rural development. They have joined forces to advance agricultural projects sponsored by the LMC Special Fund and promote the development of agricultural sectors throughout the Lancang-Mekong sub-region. These collective efforts have yielded impressive results.
In order to chart the course for Lancang-Mekong agricultural cooperation and enhance the competitiveness of the sub-region’s agricultural products, the Lancang-Mekong Agricultural Cooperation Center has undertaken research on key agricultural sectors in recent years. This research has culminated in the publication of reports focusing on such major industries as rice, natural rubber, feed, corn, and cassava. This year, our focus has been on the key tropical fruits of the sub-region, including bananas, mangoes, and durians. Through a thorough examination of production, processing, trade, and technological exchange within the tropical fruit sector, we have compiled a comprehensive overview of the development and cooperation in this sector across the LMC region. Our aim is to provide valuable insights to guide the planning and design of future cooperation projects and to enhance the level of industrialization within the tropical fruit sector across LMC countries.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, China Agricultural Reclamation Economic Development Center, Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Guangxi Subtropical Crops Research Institute for their invaluable support and assistance in the preparation of this report. Comments are welcome for any errors or deficiencies.
