PrefaceEngineering surveying is a basic course for civil engineering, urban underground space engineering, water conservancy engineering, transportation engineering and other engineering majors, and it is also a course with high requirements for students’ practical ability. With the internationalization development goal of China’s higher education and the steady progress of national strategies and initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the education of foreign students has also developed at an unprecedented speed in China, and the number of foreign students enrolled in civil engineering is also increasing, which also puts forward higher requirements for the teaching of engineering surveying. There is also an urgent need for support from English textbooks that integrate Chinese culture and reflect the latest progress of the subject. This book is prepared in accordance with the current national standards Standard for Engineering Surveying(GB 50026—2020), Code for Deformation Measurement of Building and Structure (JGJ 8—2016), and other relevant industry standards, as well as the teaching syllabus of surveying for civil engineering in colleges and universities in combination with the actual teaching experience of relevant original textbooks and course teams abroad. The contents of this book include leveling, angle measurement, distance measurement, total station, basic theory of errors in observations, control surveys, setting out, and construction surveys. This book is suitable for civil engineering, building and construction students in international education. However, it will also be found useful by any other students who undertake surveying as an elective subject, and it is anticipated that practising engineers and those who engaged in site surveying and construction will use this book as a reference textbook. The chief editor of this book is Guifeng Zhao of Zhengzhou University. The deputy editors are Hu Feng of Zhengzhou University and Fan Kong of Hefei University of Technology. The coeditors are Shuai Kang of Henan University and Yiwen Chen of Henan College of Transportation. Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 5, Chapter 7, and Chapter 8 were written by Guifeng Zhao, Chapter 1 was written by Hu Feng, Chapter 4 was written by Fan Kong, Chapter 6 was written by Shuai Kang, and Chapter 9 was written by Yiwen Chen. The entire book was drafted and finalized by Guifeng Zhao. The authors wish to thank all those who have contributed in any way to the preparation of this book and, in particular, the editorial department of the Architecture Branch of Huazhong University of Science and Technology Press.Additionally, appreciation is expressed to any others who may have been inadvertently omitted.Due to time constraints and the limited level of the authors, there are inevitably errors and loopholes in the content of the book.Readers are kindly requested to make your comments and give us your feedback.Guifeng ZhaoAugust, 2023
