46 办公室设计 Office Design
历史考试时间:20230617,20210304,20181101
The office design has undergone drastic changes over the past century, showing the influences of technological change, economic restructuring and tougher labour laws. In the early 20th century, office workers shared a large office, where they sat in a row to do typing (Q31). Before the advent of computers, this was the primary means of communication for most companies. In the 1970s, computerisation promoted the use of emails and websites for daily communication, allowing and encouraging employees to work individually with their own desks (Q32). Afterwards, with the interest in personal space growing, employers divided the office into cubicles, which separated workers with screens (Q33). Technically, they had rudimentary personal offices. But today, as office space has shrunk in the digital age and projects have become complex, open plan offices have become prevalent and people tend to share the same work space (Q34) with few enclosed rooms.

There have been numerous surveys done to gather feedback from people about this change. A loss of privacy (Q35) was cited by many as a problem, as they had to stop working and talk to colleagues frequently, after visual barriers are removed. They are also less productive as noise (Q36) such as telephone calls or conversations of their co-workers is a distraction. Another issue is that security can be compromised (Q37) considering that confidential information is now more accessible to everyone in the vicinity. Finally, working closely with so many people could pose health risks (Q38). For example, they may catch flu from each other. Employers generally have a positive attitude towards this development. As people sit close to each other, companies can rent a smaller office and cut the spending on energy bills (Q39). People can hold team meetings more easily and initiate conversations about their tasks. Supervisors also find it more convenient to provide training (Q40), whenever they see staff underperform or make mistakes.
