China is an ancient nation dating back about 5,000 years. In the course of its long history, Chinese ancestors, with their skill and knowledge, created outstanding world-leading inventions that have been passed down for thousands of years, despite the fact that they lived in times when technology was not advanced and natural conditions were not yet favorable. This intangible cultural heritage consists of a wide range of elements, from music and dance to traditional festivals, and from handicrafts to natural sciences. The ancestors created them as part of their daily life, through their own exploration, in order to express their reverence for and attitudes towards sadness and happiness, life and death, marriage, ancestors, nature, heaven and Earth. In this sense, they are active cultural elements that meet people’s environmental, social and spiritual needs.
