This is the 2nd edition of the A Laboratory Manual of Histology and Embryology. It iscertainly valued by histological & embryonic instructors and medical students for itscomprehensive coverage of histology and embryology. Our desire in editing this practicalguideline manual is to provide university faculty and undergraduate students in diverse disciplinesincluding clinical medical students, dental students, nursing students, traditional Chinese medicalstudents, and public health students with a fully developed and systematically practical manualin a histological & embryonic laboratory. Therefore, A laboratory Manual of Histology andEmbryology is designed to be an informative but very easy to use histology & embryologypractical manual. Compared to the previous version, we did not increase or decrease any chapter, but we updated a mass of illustrations that will be conducive for students to use in a histologylaboratory. The text describing the illustrations is purposely brief and concise without burdeningfaculty and students with too much redundant detail.
As we know, the histology & embryology curriculum consists of theoretical sessions andpractical sessions. Medical students will learn how to identify the characteristics of different typesof tissues and cells in the histology laboratory after they study theoretical knowledge of histologyin the classroom. Practical session has been considered as the one of central parts of teachinghistology & embryology curriculum at medical schools in China, so there is no need to emphasizethe importance. In the manual, the histological images are derived from the combination of theones made by editors themselves or the consented reproduction, and the text are re-written ormodified accordingly. All of the histological images are shown in color to precisely emphasizethe characteristics of various cells and tissues in the revised version of this practical guidancemanual. The first edition was published in 2012. We were pleased to see that the knowledge inthis histology & embryology there has been updated since 2012, so we accordingly developed anew version of the practical guidance manual.
This practical manual is composed of twenty-four chapters and divided into four aspects, including histological general introduction, histological monograph, and embryonic generalintroduction and embryonic monograph. Except for the aspect of Introduction, the content ineach chapter contains the description, demonstration and questions. For the purposes of trainingstudents, the teaching staff would ask students not only to systematically observe tissue sectionsunder a microscope but also to describe the morphological characteristics of cells, tissues,or organs in a three-dimensional world. The students would also be requested to prepare thespecimens themselves in a few chapters. The corresponding questions in all the chapters aredesigned to inspire students’ imagination.
Finally, we do wish that by sharing our practical materials, teaching experiences and newapproaches to teaching with others, teaching staff and medical students will enjoy the practicalsession in a histology laboratory as much as we do. Meanwhile, we are most grateful to all ofour brother professors (their names and affiliations are listed in each chapter) who participatedin editing this practical manual for their talents, hard-working, precious time, and extremepassion.
