Measurement technology has a wide range of applications in various fields of industrial production and scientific research. With the rapid development of science and technology, we are heading towards an era of information and intelligence, in which measurement technology plays an important role. Especially, in recent years, with the progress in 5G technology, emerging fields such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart manufacturing, big data, unmanned driving, smart robots, and virtual reality (VR) have developed rapidly. In those fields, measurement technology is the fundamental basis.Many universities in China have successively introduced the course “Measurement Technology” since the 1980s, especially for students majored in mechanics and instrumentation. From many years’ teaching experience, the authors found that many students have difficulties to connect abstract physical concepts with engineering practice, and lack the ability to solve practical engineering problems by using measurement technology flexibly. The publish of this textbook is motivated by highlighting and strengthening the engineering practice and innovation ability of college students.Therefore,the authors wrote this textbook of Fundamentals of Measurement and Signal Processing according to the national textbook publication plan of China. To make students better understand and apply the theories, the authors add many MATLAB examples, such as the generation of standard signals and the spectrum analysis of audio signals in the signal processing part, and many Arduino examples, such as temperature measuring and ultrasonic ranging to show the applications of sensors. This is a textbook with lots of reforms in content and organization, thus it is suitable for training excellent engineers.In the beginning of this textbook, there is a chapter introducing the fundamental concepts of measurement technology and its developing trend. The following chapters are divided into two part. The first part, which includes 6 chapters, introduces the signal process techniques. Chapter 1 introduces the classifications of signals, sampling of signals and classical waveform analysis methods; Chapter 2 introduces the frequency domain analysis methods; Chapter 3 introduces amplitude domain analysis methods; Chapter 4 introduces the correlation analysis methods; Chapter 5 introduces the timefrequency domain analysis methods; Chapter 6 introduces the digital signal filtering. The second part, which includes 4 chapters, mainly introduces the sensor technology and fundamentals of measurement system. Chapter 7 introduces the principles, classifications, and applications of sensors; Chapter 8 introduces the signal conditioning methods for analog signals; Chapter 9 introduces the characteristics of measurement systems; Chapter 10 introduces the principles, composition and developing trend of computerized measurement system.The theoretical part of this textbook is clearly organized along the main line of the measurement process; the application part lists a large number of examples, which come from scientific research and production practice. Particularly, this textbook absorbs the cutting edge theories and research results. Therefore, this textbook is not only suitable for teaching and selfstudy, but also for engineering and technical personnel in scientific research and design . This book can be used as a textbook for students majored in mechanical design and automation, as well as textbook for other nonmechanical majors.
