PrefaceIn April 2019， during the 14th collective study of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC)， Xi Jinping put forward the requirement of having an accurate and comprehensive understanding of history， and emphasized the necessity of drawing lessons from history and fostering stronger confidence in the path， theory， system， and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics. In fact， CPC leaders have put a high value on the study of history since Mao Zedong led the Party， and they always have a distinct perspective of historical materialism. Given such an accurate and comprehensive understanding of history， Chinese Communists attach great importance to history. They study history and draw lessons from history. They have a strong sense of mission and responsibility， and the awareness of potential danger. At each crucial historical juncture， they have made major decisions that affected the development of the Party and the country.

Postscript
When delivering the Party Central Committee’s report to the 19th National Congress of the CPC， Xi Jinping said， “Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era.” This is a scientific judgment—China is now at a new historic juncture in its development. This judgment was made from the perspective of the overall development of the cause of the Party and the state， and on the basis of the historic achievements and reforms China made during the nearly 40-year-long process of the reform and opening-up， especially during the several years after the 18th National Congress of the CPC. This new era is an era of building on past successes to further advance China’s cause， and of continuing in a new historical context to strive for the success of socialism with Chinese characteristics. This major judgment was made under the guidance of a Marxist view on the times， and signified a historic leap in adopting Marxism into the Chinese context. A profound understanding of the scientific nature of this major judgment is of great significance for the CPC to accurately grasp the fact that China is at a new historic juncture in its development， and to confidently and resolutely initiate the great journey of developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. The new era brings forward new striving goals and starts a new journey. Only by deeply understanding the profound significance of this new era can the CPC grasp the essence and characteristics of the new era. The
fact that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered the new era is of great epoch-making significance for the Chinese nation， the development of world socialism， and the progress of humanity. This book mainly expounds upon socialism with Chinese characteristics for the new era， in the hopes that accurate propaganda will give the new era more vitality and appealing power.
