《通用型大学英语读写教程（第1册 修订版）/高等教育“十一五”规划教材》以中华人民共和国教育部发布的《大学英语课程教学要求》和《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》为指导，以“实用为主、够用为度”的原则而编写。内容涵盖了需要掌握的实用英语知识和交际能力，重在培养学生综合运用语言的能力（交际能力，翻译和写作能力），兼顾了英语教学过程中的应用及应试的需要，实用性强。
《通用型大学英语读写教程（第1册 修订版）/高等教育“十一五”规划教材》共有10个单元和2套模拟测试题。每单元分为阅读、语法、翻译和写作等部分。每5个单元之后设1个复习测试单元，籍以通过归纳总结，巩固学生所学知识，提高学生读、写、译等技能。
