This is a professional course in terms of not only its subject but also its teaching in English, for which most of the students signing up came from the English Program of Master in Architecture at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. Although it was a small class composed of dozens of students, it represented a big world constituted by the knowledge of such disciplines as Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture. What is rare is that the instructors were mostly professors and experts from all over the world who have achieved great success in their respective academic fields.
This is the course of Asian Community Lecture Series: A Comparison of Architectural and Urban Culture between East and West which was presided over by Prof. Liu Jian, Associate Dean of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University.
Prof. Liu always impresses me with her conscientiousness. She would often make long-term detailed schemes in advance. Through years of accumulation, the course contents are rich enough to be published as a professional book, and the publication of this book once again proves Prof. Lius working style. I am here to give her a praise!
Actually, I have a little connection with this book. First of all, I am a promoter of this course. In 2011 when Tsinghua University celebrated its centennial Anniversary, I was the Dean of School of Architecture. An important task of mine at that time was to promote the Schools internationalization by taking good use of the opportunity that Tsinghua strove to become a world-class university. Then, as Assistant Dean, Prof. Liu was responsible for the Schools international affairs, thus the construction of English courses, which was an important part of the internationalization policy, naturally fell to her. Second, I was one of the go-betweens of this course. Tsinghua receives donations from all over the world every year, but there is hardly a donation dedicated to setting up a course. Taking that into consideration, sincere thanks should be firstly given to Mr. Yoji Sato, Chairman of One Asia Foundation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, whose willingness and vision, together with the generous sponsorship of the Foundation, promoted the establishment and development of this internationalized professional course taught in English. Special acknowledgement should also be made for Prof. Yang Jiaqing, former Vice President of Tsinghua University and former Head of Tsinghua University Education Foundation, and Mr. Liang Guodong, Trustee of The Tsinghua University Education Foundation HKSAR Ltd., who promoted the running of the sponsorship fund for this course.
A small class miniatures a big world. It not only embodies the distinguishing feature of the course, but also, to a certain extent, shows the achievement of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University in the field of educational internationalization. We hope that the publication of A Series on Architectural and Urban Culture of East and West will make some contributions to the educational internationalized of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture of China.
