本书在获得诺贝尔文学奖的诸多作家和纷繁浩瀚的作品中遴选出适合高校课堂教学的13位获奖作家的作品。所选作品兼顾主题的共鸣度、语言难易度，大致涵盖20世纪以来的各个历史时期和主要文学流派，并以作家的获奖时间为序进行编排，涉及体裁包括长篇小说、短篇小说、诗歌、剧本、演讲、报告文学等。编者在选择作品时也考虑到了文本和当下社会的联系，强调经典文学作品的当下观照，见证经典文学永恒的魅力。
