Preface
Transportation systems
are the building blocks of modern society. Efficient and safe movement of
information, people, goods and services ensures a thriving economy and improves
our quality of life. After analysis to the transportation systems and finding
the relationship between elements in terms of models, next step is finding the
method to apply for the models to implement the transportation engineering
projects such as planning, evaluation, design, and construction. In this book,
basic systems engineering methods will be introduced to transportation systems.
As lecture notes, this
book has been written mainly for the subject specialist who requires knowledge in
transportation systems field and also for students majoring in transportation
engineering, logistics management and management sciences, who desire to learn
the basic concepts involved in the use of models for transportation systems.
The materials presented is based on a large extending on courses of lectures
and books delivered by authors over a number of years to students and
professionals in the engineering, life, physical and social sciences. This book
has mainly been edited by the author to combine different parts from the book Transportation Systems Analysis by Ennio
Cascetta 2001, the lecture notes Urban
Transportation Planning Modeling by Dr. Liping Fu 2012, the online
lecture notes Transportation Systems
Engineering by Tom. V. Mathew and K.V. Krishna Rao 2007, and introduction for
transportation professionals Systems
Engineering for Intelligent Transportation Systems by U.S. Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration Federal Transit Administration 2007.
This book consists of
7 chapters which discuss transportation systems engineering models application
and projects management.
Chapter 1 introduces
the understanding to transportation systems engineering and how to apply systems
engineering methods to transportation engineering projects such as
transportation systems design and the decision making process in transportation
engineering field. The materials come from an introduction for transportation
professionals on Systems Engineering for
Intelligent Transportation Systems by U. S. Department of Transportation
Federal Highway Administration Federal Transit Administration2007 and the
book Transportation Systems Engineering
by Ennio Cascetta .
Chapter 2 introduces
transportation supply design models and solving algorithms. The materials are
adopted from the book by Ennio Cascetta.
Chapter 3-5 details the transportation systems
engineering design projects. The materials come from the online lecture notes
by Tom.V.Mathew and K.V.Krishna.
Chapter 6 introduces
Systems Engineering for Intelligent Transportation which conclude ITS project implementation and ITS project
management process. The materials are digested from an introduction for
transportation professionals on Systems Engineering for Intelligent
Transportation Systems by U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway
Administration Federal Transit Administration 2007.
Chapter 7 introduces
the transportation systems engineering for planning and evaluation which
include methods for the comparison of alternative projects. This part is digested
from the book Transportation Systems
Engineering by Ennio Cascetta.
In conclusion again I
should like to thank Dr. Ennio Cascetta, Dr. Liping Fu, Dr. Tom. V. Mathew, and
Dr. K. V. Krishna for their materials contribution. As well as to thank my
graduate students for their typing, double checking and communication with the
press.
