Cultural Link
1. According to 2014 Open Doors report, the United States hosts more of the worlds 4.5 million globally mobile college and university students than any other country in the world, with almost double the number hosted by the United Kingdom, the second leading host country. There are five times as many Chinese students on U. S. campuses as were reported in Open Doors 2000; almost two and a half times as many Indian students; seven and a half times as many Vietnamese students; and more than ten times as many Saudi students. International experience becomes one of the most important components of a 21st century education.
2. When considering the values that shape U.S. Americans attitudes and behaviors, try to remember that:
-U. S. society is made up of a diversity of ethnic groups and cultures that have helped shape American values;
-Some individuals and groups have a set of respected values that are quite different from those of mainstream America;
-Peoples attitudes and behavior are based on their values.
A Synopsis of the Text
The text provides information and advice on U.S. social customs for international students studying in this country. It covers five aspects: informality, friendship, dating, invitations and personal hygiene, all of which may help the newcomers settle down more quickly. It is easily found that U. S. universities and colleges offer this information to their international students through the Internet, brochures or other campus resources.
