The boy’s name was Santiago. Dusk was falling as the boy arrived with his herd at an abandoned church. The roof had fallen in long ago, and a huge sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy 圣器收藏室 had once stood.
He decided to spend the night there. He made sure that all the sheep entered through the ruined gate, and then laid some wooden boards across it. There were no wolves in the region, but if an animal were lost during the night, the boy would have to spend the entire next day searching for it.
He swept the floor with his jacket and lay down, using the book he had just finished reading as a pillow.
It was still dark when he awoke, and, looking up, he could see the stars through the half-destroyed roof.
“I wanted to sleep a little longer,” he thought. He had had the same dream that night as a week ago, and once again he had awakened before it ended.
He arose and, taking up his crook 牧羊杖, began to awaken the sheep that still slept. He had noticed that, as soon as he awoke, most of his animals also began to stir. It was as if some mysterious energy bound his life to that of the sheep. “They are so used to me that they know my schedule,” he muttered. Thinking about that for a moment, he realised that it could be the other way around: that it was he who had become accustomed to their schedule.
He had always believed that the sheep were able to understand what he said. So there were times when he read them parts of his books that had made an impression on him, or when he would tell them of the loneliness or the happiness of a shepherd in the fields. Sometimes he would comment to them on the things he had seen in the villages they passed.
But for the past few days he had spoken to them about only one thing: the girl, the daughter of a merchant.
1. What does the underlined word “sycamore” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. A kind of animal. B. A piece of stone.
C. A kind of tree. D. A kind of building.
2. Why did Santiago put some wooden boards across the gate?
A. To prevent the wolves going into the church at midnight.
B. To keep the thieves out of the church during the night.
C. To protect him against the cold and strong wind at midnight.
D. To stop his sheep going out of the church at midnight.
3. According to paragraphs 7 and 8, what did Santiago do to overcome his loneliness?
A. He read the books word by word to his sheep.
B. He would tell his sheep about his real feelings.
C. He would complain to his sheep about what he saw.
D. He would watch his sheep eating grass for hours.
4. What do you think the writer will mainly tell us about next?
A. The sheep. B. The merchant. C. The girl. D. The books.

(Para. 1)
every machine with moving parts has wheels; they existed over 5,500 years ago
(Para. 2—3)
animals did a perfectly good job; also be because of a difficult situation; wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces; difficult situation appeared again
(Para. 4)
in the mid-1700s; in the 1820s; in 1846; in 1967
1. 时间点:具体的年月日,如today,every year,on the third Tuesday in April,at the age of 14等;when,while,during,as等引导的时间状语从句。
2. 特殊点:but, however, while, whereas等引导的强转折;after all, in fact, actually 等词也可表示强转折;与原情况不同之处也算作特殊点(在第一遍扫读文章时可能区分不出来);比较级、最高级和用于表达比较级或最高级含义的形容词也算特殊点,如as much as, than, three times greater, more than 程度, the more... the more, superior to, inferior
to等。
When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet 图章 ring. They were the “in” thing and it seemed every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my mum gave me a signet ring with my initials 姓名首字母 carved into it. I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn’t being “replaced”. We’d been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so most of the “new” stuff 东西 we got was really just to replace what we’d lost. But not my ring. My ring was new.
Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents’ when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn’t my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. “You’ll recognize this one,” she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside.
The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They’d had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother.
And it still fits me.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer’s family moved several times.
B. The writer never stopped looking for her ring.
C. The writer’s ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.
D. The writer lost her ring in the morning when she took it off.
2. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My New Ring B. Lost and Found
C. Lost and Replaced D. An Expensive Ring

Lesson 1My high school days
1LessonMy high school days 1
ReadingPart I
“Please introduce yourself briefly,” said Jack. It was when I sat face to face with the
teenager in charge of school basketball club I applied to. Feeling exactly concerned and
upset, I tried to calm myself down. My memory flashed back.
Having packed books, overcoats and other items in my suitcases, I got on the bus,
waving goodbye to my window with dusty curtains. As usual, I saw people walking dogs
which are quite loose outdoors.
I have got to admit that I felt ignored when I entered high school. Soon, I began to be
tired of the life. I disliked it when I set down teachers’ words and devoted myself to my
study just in order to achieve high grades. I preferred to play basketball. Firstly, it made me
more powerful and creative. Secondly, it was a guarantee of being healthy. I entirely fell in
love with it. Too many times, at dusk, in spite of the thunder, I shouted on the playground on
purpose. Need I join a series of such clubs? I added up all the advantages and disadvantages
and decided it may settle my problems.
Luckily, Jack was content with my performance. In company with other members, I no
longer suffer from loneliness. However, I went through many injuries, from which I soon

However, I went through many injuries, from which I soon
recovered.
I felt grateful for my partners’ tips on how to get along with others though sometimes I
disagreed with them. I appreciate their help. I wouldn’t swap the experience with anyone for
anything.
