本书共有13篇论文，分为4个部分，分别是“学习母语”、“学习其他语言”、“教育中的语言”和“论英语语法”。第一部分（“学习母语”）有3篇文章，都围绕儿童语言发展（语言习得）的早期阶段的有关问题展开；第二部分“学习其他语言”有3篇文章，讨论学习母语以外的语言问题；第三部分“教育中的语言”有3篇文章，主要围绕着语言教育问题，讨论教育过程中语言角色的变化和语言本质的变化；第四部分“论英语语法”有3 篇文章，讨论所涉及的核心问题是理论语言学与应用语言学的融合。

韩礼德教授，现为澳洲悉尼大学荣誉退休教授及香港城市大学韩礼德语言研究智能应用中心顾问。世界两大主要语言学派之一的“系统功能语言学”（SystemicFunctionalLinguistics）的创始人，国际知名语言学家。代表著作有ExplorationsintheFunctionsofLanguage、LearningHowtoMean、AnIntroductiontoFunctionalGrammar等。
