本教材精选了十三位英美著名作家的经典小说十五部，共分十五个单元，每单元涉及一位作家和一部作品（有个别作家被选了两部作品，在下一单元就只涉及作品本身），每单元由作家简介、小说故事梗概、原著选读、主要人物介绍和分析、主题分析、影视改编、影视对白选读和讨论题八个部分组成。在作家简介和影视改编中，配有从网络上下载的作家和作品图片以及从不同版本影视作品中截取的画面，这些图片便于读者对作家、作品和不同版本的影视都有一个从感性到理性的认识过程。 近些年,国内高校为了提倡大学生的综合素质教育，开设了不少通识课程，本教材可供非英语专业的大学生使用，也可以供英语专业大学生作为辅助教材使用，加深对英语经典作品的理解，提高对西方艺术电影的鉴赏能力，从而提高自身的西方文化修养。
