Chapter 1 Get well!
It began with a visit to the doctor. ‘You need a holiday,’ the doctor told me. ‘You need a rest.’
‘I can’t take a holiday,’ I answered. ‘I’m too busy.’
‘No, Liz,’ said the doctor. ‘You don’t understand.
If you don’t take a holiday, you’re going to get very, very ill.’
‘I’m just tired,’ I said. ‘I feel tired.’
‘No,’ he said. ‘It’s more than that. Are you doing too much? You teach, don’t you?’
‘Well, yes,’ I said. ‘I’m teaching and studying archaeology at the university.’
‘What else are you doing?’ he asked me.
‘I’m learning to speak Greek,’ I replied. ‘And I’m writing a book.’
‘I see,’ he said. ‘You’re learning to speak Greek, you’re writing a book and you’re working at the university. Don’t you think that’s too much? How many hours do you sleep at night?’
‘Four or five hours most nights,’ I told him.
‘It’s not enough,’ he said. ‘You need to slow down.
Is your husband here in Greece with you?’ the doctor asked.

故事起于一次就诊。“你需要休假，”医生告诉我。“你需要休息一下。”
“我不能休假，”我回答说。“我太忙了。”
“不行，利兹，”医生说。“你不明白。如果不休假，你会病得非常非常厉害。”
“我只是累了，”我说。“我感觉疲惫。”
“不，”他说，“不只是那样。你是不是工作得太多了？你是老师，对吗？”
“哦，是的，”我说。“我在大学做考古学的教学和研究。”
“还在做什么？”他问我。
“我在学说希腊语，”我回答道。“我还在写一本书。”
“我明白了，”他说。“你在学说希腊语，在写书，还在大学工作。难道你不觉得那太多了吗？你晚上睡几个小时？”
“大多数晚上睡四五个小时，”我告诉他。
“那不够，”他说。“你需要慢下来。你丈夫和你一起在希腊这儿吗？”医生问。
