Inthedevelopmentofthefieldofdesignstudies,oneoftheimportantareasofemergingknowledgehasbeentheevolutionofresearch,theoriesandexperimentalmodelsrelatedtoprocessesofdesign.RivkaOxmanwasoneofthefirstresearcherstoexploretherelationshipbetweendesignthinkingandcomputationalmodelsofdesign.Forseveraldecadesshehasbeenamongthecorebodyofinternationaldesignresearchers.Inrecognitionofhercontributionsthroughresearchandpublicationtotheunderstandingofarchitecturalknowledgeinmodelsofdesignthinkingandtheroleofknowledgeindesigneducation,shehasbeenappointedaFellowoftheDesignResearchSociety.Inrecentyearsherworkhasattemptedtoreorientdesignthinkingresearchtoexperimentalmodelsofdigitaldesignthinking.Shehasformulatednovelinformationmodelsofdigitaldesignsuchasgenerativeandperformance-baseddesign.Indefiningandformulatingthesemodelsinherresearchandwritings,shehasexploredexperimentalpedagogyinarchitecturaleducationasamediumtopromoteresearch-orienteddesign.Since2006shehasbeenleadinganexperimentaldigitaldesignstudioattheTechnionIsraelInstituteofTechnology.Sheisanarchitect,researcher,authorandeducator.ForthepastfouryearsshehasbeentheViceDeanoftheFacultyofArchitectureandTownPlanningattheTechnion.Aprominentmemberoftheinternationalresearchcommunityindesign,sheisalsoAssociateEditorofDesignStudiesandamemberoftheeditorialboardofleadinginternationaljournals.Currentinterestsaretheexplorationofadaptivegenerativemechanismsofarchitecturalandstructuralmorphologyandtheirabilitytoberesponsivetochangingenvironmentalconditions.Themergingoftheoryandpraxisinarchitectureanddesignhasbecomeanimportantinfluenceuponcurrentdesign.Newvectorsoftheoreticalactivity,particularlyinrecentdecades,havecometoplayanimportantroleinemergingdesignpractices.RobertOxmanisanarchitect,educator,writerandresearcherinthefieldofarchitecturalanddesignhistoriesandtheories.HewaseducatedatHarvardCollegeandtheHarvardGraduateSchoolofDesignwherehestudiedwithJosepLluisSertandFumihikoMaki.HeisProfessorandDeanEmeritusattheTechnionandiscurrentlyProfessorofArchitecturalandDesignHistoryandTheoriesatShenkarCollegeofEngineeringandDesigninTelAviv.AtShenkar,heisDeanofGraduateStudiesandengagedindevelopingauniqueprogrammeofgraduateeducationwhichintegratesdesign,technologyandindustry.OxmanhasheldthechairsofDesignMethodsandCAADattheTechnicalUniversityEindhovenintheNetherlands.Hisworkinarchitecturalanddesignhistoryandtheoriessince1945hasbeenpublishedinternationally.Heiscurrentlyinvolvedinresearchingandwritinginthreefields.Thefirst,ondesignconcepts,involvestheevolutionofarchitecturalanddesigntheoriesandpracticesafterModernism.Thisworkalsoaddressestheemergenceofarchitecturalanddesignresearchduringthisperiod.Thesecond,undertakenincollaborationwithRivkaOxman,isthedefinitionoftheimpactofdigitaldesignuponemergingtheoriesanddesignpractices.CurrentlyentitledTheDigitalinDesign:TheoryandDesignintheDigitalAge,itisscheduledforpublicationbyTaylorFrancisin2011.Thethirdarea,involvingarchitecturalanddesignknowledge,relatestotheroleofknowledgeindesign,educationandresearch,andparticularlythesignificanceofuniversalknowledgeinadigitalage.
