‘TheBitterYears’wasthetitleofaseminalexhibitionheldin1962atTheMuseumofModernArt,NewYork,curatedbyEdwardSteichen,and2012marksits50thanniversary.Theshowfeatured209imagesbyphotographerswhoworkedundertheaegisoftheUSFarmSecurityAdministrationFSAin1935–41aspartofRoosevelt’sNewDeal.TheGreatDepressionofthe1930sdefinedagenerationinmodernAmericanhistoryandwasstillavividmemoryin1962.TheFSA,setuptocombatruralpoverty,includedanambitiousphotographyprojectthatlaunchedmanyphotographiccareers,mostnotablythoseofWalkerEvansandDorotheaLange.TheexhibitionfeaturedtheirworkaswellasthatoftenotherFSAphotographers,includingBenShahn,CarlMydansandArthurRothstein.Theirimagesareamongthemostremarkableindocumentaryphotography–testimoniesofapeopleincrisis,hitbythefullforceofeconomicturmoilandtheeffectsofdroughtandduststorms.TheBitterYearscelebratessomeofthemosticonicphotographsofthe20thcenturyand,sincenopropercataloguewasproducedatthetime,providesawholenewinsightintoSteichen’simpactonthehistoryofdocumentaryphotography.
