AspotlightonFrenchlandscapepaintersofthefirsthalfofthe20thcenturywhichisatruehymntonatureEightFrenchpaintersbornafter1870arebroughttogetherforthefirsttimeinanexhibitionthathighlightstheirmutualaffinitiesandchartstheirrespectiveinfluencesandevolutions.AsidefromGastonBalande1880-1971,whoiswellknownforhisartdecowallmuralsdesignedfortransatlanticships,andPaulDeltombe1878-1971,whobenefitedfromaretrospectiveexhibitionin1970,theworkoftheotherpainterscollectedherehasremaineduncelebratedforfartoolong.Thepresentexhibitionanditscatalogueaimtorepairthisoversight,aswellastoreignitethestudyofthisgenerationofFrenchpainterswho,withoutturningtheirbackontheavant-gardists,concentratedprimarilyonthetraditionalgenreoflandscape,andtoalesserdegreeonstill-lifes.The80worksofart,mainlypaintedbetweenthewars,areatthecrossroadsofthemanyinfluencesofthiscreativeperiod,wheretraditionandtheavant-gardeblendedtogetherwithoutrestraint.Thissyncretismisfrequentlyillustratedbylandscapeswherethediversityreflectsthesearchforneweffectsandbeautifulthemesaswellasanappetitefortravelanddiscoveries.ThispanoramaofDouceFrancesignalsthelastbreathforthispictorialstylethatwastheinheritorandcontinuationoftheImpressionistmovementastatusthatwasboundtobelostforeveraftertheSecondWorldWar.
