James Patrick Kelly has spent the better part of a decade
covering Idaho’s food and wine scene, traveling all across the
state to write about everything from locally-produced caviar in
Hagerman Valley to winemaking in Sunny Slope to foraging for morel
mushrooms in Yellow Pine.
An avid angler, mountain biker, backpacker, and Nordic skier,
James was initially drawn to Idaho because of the state’s abundance
of outdoor sports. He moved there in 2000 to attend Boise State
University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in
communicationsjournalism. In his professional life, he worked as a
freelance contributor to the Idaho Statesman, Boise’s daily
newspaper, for which he wrote weekly restaurant reviews and
food-related and entertainment news, as well as produced travel
pieces for Treasure, the paper’s glossy lifestyle magazine.
James is currently a frequent contributor to Northwest Palate, a
Portland-based food, wine, and travel magazine, in which he has
published many articles about Idaho. He also writes a twice-monthly
column for Village Voice Media’s professional food blog,
dailyfork.com. He lives in Boise, ID.
