This is a wonderful new version of a mathematics classic, with
commentary by renowned science writer Ian Stewart. Published in
1884 by the English Clergyman Edwin A.A Abbott, "Flatland" is a
unique and delightful satire. The fanciful tale of a
two-dimensional being who is whisked away by a mysterious visitor
to The Land of Three Dimensions, it exposed Abbott''s Victorian
readers to the then-radical idea of a fourth dimension - preparing
them for Einstein''s spectacular theories of relativity.Like the
original, Ian Stewart''s commentary takes readers on a strange and
wonderful journey. With clarity and wit, Stewart illuminates
Abbot''s Victorian references, weaves in little known biographical
information about Abbott and his intellectual circle, and traces
the scientific evolution of geographical forms and dimensions.
Touching on such diverse topics as ancient Babylon, Karl Marx, Mary
Shelley''s Frankenstein, the Georgian calendar and Mount Everest,
Stewart makes fascinating connections between Flatland and Abbott''s
life and times. The result is a classic of rival Abbott''s own, and
a book that will inspire and delight curious readers for
generations to come.

student of the classics and a writer of some renown. Although
Flatland is certainly his most enduring work, Abbott wrote over
fifty books, most of them scholarly works. He died in Hampstead on
October 12, 1926. Ian Stewart is Professor of Mathematics at the
University of Warwick and Director of its Mathematics Awareness
Centre. His many books include Does God Play Dice?, Nature''s
Numbers, Flatterland, Letters to a Young Mathematician and Why
