Thereisaneternal,ever-presentOneLifebeyondthemyriadformsoflifethataresubjecttobirthanddeath.ManypeopleusethewordGodtodescribeit;IoftencallitBeing.ThewordBeingexplainsnothing,butnordoesGod.Being,however,hastheadvantagethatitisanopenconcept.Itdoesnotreducetheinfiniteinvisibletoafiniteentity.Itisimpossibletoformamentalimageofit.NobodycanclaimexclusivepossessionofBeing.Itisyourverypresence,anditisimmediatelyaccessibletoyouasthefeelingofyourownpresence.SoitisonlyasmallstepfromthewordBeingtotheexperienceofBeing.BEINGISNOTONLYBEYONDBUTALSODEEPWITHINeveryformasitsinnermostinvisibleandindestructibleessence.Thismeansthatitisaccessibletoyounowasyourowndeepestself,yourtruenature.Butdon’tseektograspitwithyourmind.Don’ttrytounderstandit.Youcanknowitonlywhenthemindisstill.Whenyouarepresent,whenyourattentionisfullyandintenselyintheNow,Beingcanbefelt,butitcanneverbeunderstoodmentally.ToregainawarenessofBeingandtoabideinthatstateof“feeling-realization”isenlightenment.Thewordenlightenmentconjuresuptheideaofsomesuperhumanaccomplishment,andtheegolikestokeepitthatway,butitissimplyyournaturalstateoffeltonenesswithBeing.Itisastateofconnectednesswithsomethingimmeasurableandindestructible,somethingthat,almostparadoxically,isessentiallyyouandyetismuchgreaterthanyou.Itisfindingyourtruenaturebeyondnameandform.Theinabilitytofeelthisconnectednessgivesrisetotheillusionofseparation,fromyourselfandfromtheworldaroundyou.Youthenperceiveyourself,consciouslyorunconsciously,asanisolatedfragment.Feararises,andconflictswithinandwithoutbecomethenorm.Thegreatestobstacletoexperiencingtherealityofyourconnectednessisidentificationwithyourmind,whichcausesthoughttobecomecompulsive.Nottobeabletostopthinkingisadreadfulaffliction,butwedon’trealizethisbecausealmosteverybodyissufferingfromit,soitisconsiderednormal.ThisincessantmentalnoisepreventsyoufromfindingthatrealmofinnerstillnessthatisinseparablefromBeing.Italsocreatesafalsemind-madeselfthatcastsashadowoffearandsuffering.Identificationwithyourmindcreatesanopaquescreenofconcepts,labels,images,words,judgements,anddefinitionsthatblocksalltruerelationship.Itcomesbetweenyouandyourself,betweenyouandyourfellowmanandwoman,betweenyouandnature,betweenyouandGod.Itisthisscreenofthoughtthatcreatestheillusionofseparateness,theillusionthatthereisyouandatotallyseparate“other.”Youthenforgettheessentialfactthat,underneaththelevelofphysicalappearancesandseparateforms,youareonewithallthatis.Themindisasuperbinstrumentifusedrightly.Usedwrongly,however,itbecomesverydestructive.Toputitmoreaccurately,itisnotsomuchthatyouuseyourmindwrongly—youusuallydon’tuseitatall.Itusesyou.Thisisthedisease.Youbelievethatyouareyourmind.Thisisthedelusion.Theinstrumenthastakenyouover.It’salmostasifyouwerepossessedwithoutknowingit,andsoyoutakethepossessingentitytobeyourself.THEBEGINNINGOFFREEDOMistherealizationthatyouarenotthepossessingentity—thethinker.Knowingthisenablesyoutoobservetheentity.Themomentyoustartwatchingthethinker,ahigherlevelofconsciousnessbecomesactivated.Youthenbegintorealizethatthereisavastrealmofintelligencebeyondthought,thatthoughtisonlyatinyaspectofthatintelligence.Youalsorealizethatallthethingsthattrulymatter—beauty,love,creativity,joy,innerpeace—arisefrombeyondthemind.Youbegintoawaken.--ThistextreferstothePaperbackedition.
