On Christmas Eve, 1956, while working as a BBC cameraman,
Michael Bond bought a small toy bear who had been left alone on a
shelf in a London department store. Feeling sorry for it, he took
it home for his wife and they named it ''Paddington'' as they were
living near Paddington station. He wrote some stories about the
bear, just for fun, but soon found that he had a book on his hands.
In 1958, A Bear Called Paddington was published with many, many
more stories to follow. Michael still lives in London with his
wife, Sue. In 1997 he was awarded the OBE for his services to
children''s literature.
