透纳十二岁，是牧师的儿子，他和爸爸妈妈从波士顿搬到缅因州，可是缅因州的孩子欺生，处处给他难堪，棒球故意不让他打到、说话带刺，又逼他从悬崖上跳水；他咽不下这口气，索性离大家远远的。在孤单一个人的时候他遇到了马拉加岛上的黑人女孩莉莉，他和莉莉一起到岛上认识当地黑人，并成了好朋友。他也常和莉莉一起在海滩练习打棒球，一起挖蛤蜊。有一次他们一起划船到外海，看到了鲸在他们近边同游，透纳看到了鲸的眼睛，觉得它里面似乎藏着洞悉世间的秘密；因此鲸的眼神时时在他心里环绕。
日子久了，透纳渐渐发现当地一些特权份子找他爸爸过来传道，真正的用意其实是希望利用他爸爸的背书，把马拉加岛的黑人赶走，好让他们发展观光事业。透纳眼看着岛上的好朋友一个个被驱逐出境，心生不忍，要想将自己受赠自一位老太太那儿的房子，送给莉莉，却被当地人制止，最后莉莉甚至被送往精神病院，死在院中，而爸爸也因为要保护他，和一名当地警官拉扯而摔下悬崖。爸爸落海前的双眼让他想起那洞悉一切的鲸眼。

stands alone against them. He and Lizzie try to save her community,
but there’s a terrible price to pay for going against the tide.
