Conversations
Li Hua: This is Tian''an Men Square.
Ann: What a huge place!
Li Hua: Yes, it is the largest public square in the world.
Ann: Oh, is that so?
Li Hua: Yes. See that building over there?
Ann: Yes, it''s magnificent.
Carl: I suppose that must be the Great Hall of the People.
Li Hong: Right. You may be interested to know that the constrution of the whole
thing took less than a year.
Andy: Really!That''s amazing!
Li Hong: On the east side of the Tian''an Men Square, the building is China
National Museum.
Carl: I heard that it is currently being rebuilt.
Li Hong: Yes. It will be open to the public in March.
Li Hua: Now we are arriving at Tian''an Men Square. Have you ever been here
before?
Kate: No, this is my first time in Beijing, so it''s my first time to see such a
magnificent square.
Li Hua: It''s 800 metres from south to north and 500 metres from east to west. It
covers an area of 440, 000 square metres. And it is the largest square
in the world today. Over there you can see the famous Golden Water
Bridges.
Kate: One, two... oh, seven bridges in total, but could you tell me why should
there be seven?
Li Hua: Well, in ancient times, only the emperor or empress could walk on
the bridge in the center. The two bridges on both sides of it were for
members of the royal family. The two bridges further were built for highranking
officials. The other officials were only allowed to take the last
two bridges built further away from these five.
Kate: Wow!It really shows the differences in feudalistic social status.
