本次汉英对照版《红楼梦》，前八十回的英文部分以霍克思先生翻译的企鹅出版社《石头记》The Story Of the
Stone，Penguin Books1973
年版第一卷、1977年版第二卷、1980年版第三卷为底本，参照霍克思先生《红楼梦英译笔记》香港岭南大学文学与翻译研究中心，2000年及相关日记、书信，对现有译文作了全面系统的校订。
中文部分则以人民文学出版社1964年竖排版启功校注为底本，主要参校《红楼梦八十回校本》俞平伯校本、《脂砚斋重评石头记》庚辰本
、《脂砚斋甲戌抄阅再评石头记》甲戌本、《戚蓼生序本石头记》有正本、《乾隆抄本百廿回红楼梦稿》梦稿本，这些都是霍克思先生在翻译过程中主要参考过的本子。我们的目的是为读者提供一个可靠的汉英对照本，同时如实地反映出霍克思先生在翻译过程中到底做了哪些增删改动，为翻译研究者和爱好者提供参考。因为，读者可以清楚地看到，霍克思的八十回英译本，是与现存各种脂本程本都不一样的本子，我们不妨称之为“霍本”。这个奇特英译《红楼梦》，真实地反映了霍克思先生在翻译过程中的诸多努力。霍克思先生已于2009年7月仙逝。在生前最后几个月内，他还在不断地修改自己的译文。本书也落实了这些修改意见。

话说贾政去见节度，进去了半日，不见出来，外头议论不一。李十儿在外也打听不出什么事来，便想到报上的饥荒，实在也着急。好容易听见贾政出来了，便迎上来跟着，等不得回去，在无人处，便问：“老爷进去这半天，有什么要紧的事?”贾政笑道：“并没有事。只为镇海总制是这位大人的亲戚，有书来嘱托照应我，所以说了些好话。又说：‘我们如今也是亲戚了。”李十儿听得，心内喜欢，不免又壮了些胆子，便竭力怂恿贾政许这亲事。
贾政心想，薛蟠的事到底有什么挂碍，在外头信息不通难以打点，故回到本任来便打发家人进京打听；顺便将总制求亲之事回明贾母，如若愿意，即将三姑娘接到任所。家人奉命，赶到京中回明了王夫人，便在吏部打听得贾政并无处分，惟将署太平县的这位老爷革职。即写了禀帖，安慰了贾政，然后住着等信。
且说薛姨妈为着薛蟠这件人命官司，各衙门内不知花了多少银钱，才定了误杀具题。原打量将当铺折变给人，备银赎罪，不想刑部驳审，又托人花了好些钱，总不中用，依旧定了个死罪，监着守候秋天大审。薛姨妈又气又疼，日夜啼哭。宝钗虽时常过……

tojoin him，in preparation for the wedding The servant set off witll
a11 speed for the capital He reported fit to Lady Wang， and then
went to the Board of Civil Office．where his enquiries revealed that
the only peon to have suffered in the Xue Pan affair was the acting
magistrate ofTai—ping，who had lost his job，and that Jia Zheng was
not in any way implicated．The servant sent back a reassuring report
to Jia Zheng，himself remaining behind to await further
developments。 It will be remenabered to what lengths Aunt Xue had
gone，and with what large sunls of monev stle had bribed the various
courts involved，to bring in a verdict of‘accidental homicide’in the
earlier stages ofXue Pan。s case She had been proposing to raise the
money for his fine by selling the family pawhop business Now when
she heard of the new verdict brought bv the Board ofPunishments，she
sent still more bribes，but to no avail The sentence was
confirmed—death by strangulation after the Autumn Assizes Day and
night sbe wept tea of grief and rage……
