this textbook covers both direct and iterative methods for the
solution of lineal systems, least squares problems, eigenproblems,
and the singular value decom- position. earlier versions have been
used by the author in graduate classes ir the mathematics
department of the university of california at berkeley since 1990
and at the courant institute before then.
in writing this textbook i aspired to meet the following
